Philosophy in the LAS program - what's the point?
Philosophy does not have good press today (or maybe it never had?). We associate this noble discipline with discussions of little use and importance in everyday life. In the field of Liberal Arts and Sciences, we recognize that philosophy in the traditional sense (meant as "love of wisdom": gr. philein - to love, sophia - wisdom) plays a fundamental role. This wisdom organizes our world and answers essential yet abstract questions: about truth, goodness and beauty. Individual sciences provide us with interesting, detailed knowledge, but they will not answer the question of what science itself is. That is why our interdisciplinary program cannot do without philosophy! It allows students to organize the knowledge from the particular disciplines they learn.
Liberal Arts and Sciences program includes the following classes dedicated (at least in part) to philosophy:
Theory of Knowledge (30h) - class' page
Theory of Science (30h) - class' page
Knowledge in Context (30h) - class' page
