Antigone Magazine

On Wednesday, March 10th, the English-language, online Antigone magazine, addressed to young people and non-specialists, began its operation, the aim of which is to popularize ancient culture and research on it. One of its authors is professor Mateusz Stróżyński, director of the Institute of Classical Philology at AMU and LAS lecturer.

The first six articles met with a huge response in the Anglo-Saxon world, both in social media and in the press. Antigone received a mention in The Times. Also, Professor Mary Beard, a famous classical philologist, discussed it in an article for Times Literary Supplement. Among the authors of the first articles are such world-famous figures as Stephen Fry (an award-winning British actor and author of books popularizing ancient culture) and Tom Holland (an outstanding historian and author of bestsellers combining a scientific workshop with a hypnotic narrative). During the first week, 1,000 to 2,000 people from 75 countries per day visited the website https://www.antigonejournal.com. Several hundred people became regular subscribers of the journal. Every other day a new article is published. Not only outstanding scientists from around the world but also doctoral students, students and people fascinated by the ancient world contribute to Antigone.

The project was created by a group of classical philologists from Great Britain, the United States, New Zealand and Poland.
